Certified Ignition Interlock
What Is An Ignition Interlock Device?
A certified ignition interlock device is a breath alcohol testing instrument connected to the ignition and power system of a vehicle. The driver blows into the device before attempting to turn the ignition. If the driver’s alcohol level is above a certain level, the vehicle will not start. While the vehicle is operating, the driver must blow into the device at random intervals.
Must I Have One?
If an individual is convicted of a DUI, Arizona Motor Vehicle Division will order the device installed on any motor vehicle the convicted individual operates. Everybody convicted of a DUI is required to have one installed.
Arizona law mandates that you install an ignition interlock device on your car for one year. Because the ignition interlock is a requirement for obtaining or keeping a valid license, you can not wait the one year out. Even if you wait five years, you must have the device installed.
